esther and i were devastated, but what can we do? we can only shout and shriek at the tv, bang our fists on the table, make wierd howling noises. but what else? it was especially heartwrenching to see ROONEY go down. sports. it lights up our lives. but has sports become tainted by commercialism? i see sponsorship banners everywhere, players wearing jerseys printed with names like SAMSUNG, VODAFONE. i even saw banners that printed- CHELSEAFCMONEY.COM
this excerpt was written by one of my GP classamates, whom i dont know. it's really beautiful.
one name, two images.
one of sun-kissed fields where all are level, where the first amongst equals recives laurel leaves. an event spasrely attended by those who share the joy of going higher, faster, further.
the other image, of roaring stadiums, blaring advertisements, resounding cheers, all thrumming in a million heartbeats united in the glory of winnng, of beating all else to snatch the prize money. an image beamed the world over, bounced out into space and back again, lighting up a million livign rooms, ensuring the whole world truly watches.
one name, two images.
and they could possibly be more different. yet, we ask ourselves, are the Olympics of yesteryear and the present that different?is there no overarching view of sport that can unite the two? how much has the joy of going higher, faster and further changed?
isnt that beautiful?
